Until a month ago, the filmspere had been pretty dry for me. Nothing had caught my attention and to be honest, I was beginning to get fairly bummed about it. But just when I thought there weren’t any interesting films on the slate, two films drop into my lap and they both star rising star Aditya Roy Kapur (Guzaarish, Aashiqui 2).
The first look at the central cast of Abhishek Kapoor‘s re-imagining of the Charles Dickens classic, Great Expectations was released in early May and I couldn’t be more psyched. The shot is nothing to stir about for there’s nothing titillating or interesting about about it, however, my excitement comes from the cast and the fact the film is actually getting made.
For the past year, news has been circulating about this project, and while Katrina Kaif (New York, Dhoom 3) was always attached, Sushant Singh (Kai Po Che, Peekay) was touted as Kapoor’s Pip. But that fell through quickly with rumors of Kaif and Singh tension and thoughts of this film getting off the ground died, until a few months ago when Kapur was added to the pack.
I have to admit I’d love to see a Singh and Kaif pairing, for I believe there is much chemistry to be had there, but if the rumors are true, that won’t happen anytime soon. However, as for this film, I do believe Kapur is the perfect fit.
But even with all the leading man hullabaloo, the best thing about this film has to be the magnificent and classically radiant Rekha (Umrao Jaan, Lajja) taking on the role of the unhinged Miss Havisham. For no matter the avenue Kapoor seeks to take this depiction; overbearing and unbridled or sadistic and unbalanced, she is the only actress that is seamless enough to transcend either portrayal effortlessly.
The script has been penned by Supratik Sen and Abhishek Kapoor and the film is slated to begin shooting in August this year.
