Double dipping in nothing new, especially for Asian actors and India is notorious for overlapping projects. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Shah Rukh Khan is not only currently filming his reunion with Kajol but also Ritesh Sidhwani‘s (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Kathik Calling Karthik) film Raees. Shooting began in April releasing its first teaser in mid-July.
Raees, translating as “Rich” is set in a 1980’s Gujarati Muslim ghetto where Khan portrays a bootlegger turned gangster. The excellent Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Gangs of Wasseypur Pts 1&2, Bombay Talkies) will play opposite him in a law enforcement role while Pakistani actress Mahira Khan makes her Hindi film debut as his love interest.
Not much to go on, even with the teaser— however, one thing is clear, Khan will yet again play a charismatic titular character (which of course is just how we like it). The production itself looks sleeker than expected and there is a slight glimmer of hope, the romance will be minimal. Given the producer and the focus more on Raees himself, I can’t help but anticipate a Don franchise feel with an anti-hero concept.
Raees premieres July 2016.
