Highway: The Music

Like all Bollys a film’s official music launch is months before the film’s release, so audiences can get a taste and feel for the film, sometimes even before an official trailer.

Imtiaz Ali’s new project Highway hit theaters over a month ago but its music actually released a month before. However, it’s definitely true that looks can be deceiving for from the stills , I was looking for more instrumental scores and moody pieces. So color me shocked when my eardrum pops to club beats and dance mixes!

Highway is a literal title in that it was filmed on the road (or highways) from Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradeshand Kashmir, with its actors using the unpredictable sources of nature and travel as visceral viand for the script and story, which was part improv and handwritten on location.

I personally haven’t gotten around to seeing this film, but my curiosity began with the director and his venture to make a linear film and was solidified with my genuine appreciation for each track on its soundtrack. With a premise about a girl who gets kidnapped, one would believe the tone of the film to be much more introspective and solemn, focusing on the dejection of isolation and inner struggle and revelation but from listening to the soundtrack the emphasis is placed much less on the heroine’s fear and more on her freedom.
