News: Downton Abbey

The sisters of ITV1’s 2010 hit series Downton Abbey slipped out of their flapper dresses and winter frocks for Vogue couture in August’s newly released issue. The young actresses, Michelle Dockery(29), Laura Carmichael(23), Jessica Brown-Findlay(20), play rivaling sisters on television but look ravishing together in these pages, whetting our appetite for their much awaited second season Fall premiere. The issue also gives a few glimpses of other cast members on the set of series 2.

Look at all the pretty pretty, some behind the scenes pics and a couple clips of their show, after you…

There is just something I am in love with about this photo. I’m not sure if it’s the dress, the location and greenery, her hair or her toes peeking from beneath. It’s just stinking lovely. By far my favorite!

Downton Abbey- the show

Downton Abbey premiered last September on ITV1 later airing on Masterpiece in the U.S. (9th January). An original screenplay created and written by  Julian Fellowes (Carnival/Masterpiece), the series is set in early 20th Century during the reign of King George V, spanning the two years prior to the Great War and depicts the lives, loves and politics of the entire Crawley family household (up and downstairs). The drama stars Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess Violet, Hugh Bonneville portrays Robert, Earlof Grantham, and Elizabeth McGovern as his American wife Cora.

We arrive in Downton in April 1912, when the Titanic sinks and Downton loses it’s male heirs, James and his son Patrick. However, the real drama begins when the title and estate don’t immediately pass to Patrick’s fiancee, Robert’s eldest daughter, Mary (Michelle Dockery) but a distant unknown cousin, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) and his mother, Isobel (Penelope Wilton). Two sides of the family clash and maneuver creating wonderful gossip for the servants who have their own dealings to attend. Mysterious new valet John Bates (Brendan Coyle) arrives to immediate apprehension and manipulation unveiling the smiling faces of the Crawley servants, making Downton Abbey the most popular drama on it’s network since 2003. This drama is full of secrets, presumed murders and political battles; all the things that make up a great story but even better when it has to work within the taboo of a certain time and country.

The second series was  announced for Fall 2011 before it’s American air date and news broke recently of the new cast members: Zoe Boyle (Sons of Anarchy), Cal Macaninch (Wild At Heart), Iain Glen (Spooks), Amy Nuttall (Hotel Babylon) and Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors). Boyle will play new character Miss Lavinia Swire, Glen; Sir Richard Carlisle; Doyle-Kennedy; Vera Bates (wife of John Bates) rounding out the aristocrats, while Nuttall and Macaninch will be joining the staff as new housemaid Ethel  and new valet Lang. The series is slated for an eight episode run with a Christmas Special at the end of the year.

Below catch a glimpse of the Series 1 and be prepared for an exciting Fall in Dowton. Don’t miss it.
